Company History

Nestled in the hills behind Coffs Harbour is the picturesque Orara Valley. On the banks of the Orara River at Coramba stands the old Butter Factory, built in 1904 by the Orara Co-Operative Dairy Co.

Over the next eighty years the premises served as a butter and cheese factory, a pickle factory, an ice cream factory, a paint bush handle factory and finally a building products and timber supply Company.

In early 1987 the latter Company closed down, leaving twenty-six workers unemployed and uncertain as to their future and that of their families. Some had to leave the area to find employment whilst others had to pursue any work that was available in other fields.

Nine former employees realised there was a void in the market place that needed to be filled to provide the public with professional wood machining and wood turning service. The nine pooled their resources and formed a Workers’ Co-op and after an arduous seven months of negotiations Coramba Timbers commenced operations.

As time went by members of the Workers’ Co-operative left to pursue other paths in life. Now two of the founding members work in partnership to continue the original plan of bringing Quality products with friendly, informative service to our customers.

The business is owned and controlled locally, not by a multi-national Company in some faraway place. It employs a group of local workers who care about the quality of their product and have the dedication needed to provide our customers with the level of service they deserve.

So, when you need timber or products made from timber, contact the people who know timber, work with timber and excel at bringing out its finest feature.
